This project consisted of constructing approximately 21,959 feet of 5-strand barbed wire along Butte Creek and Bethel Creek. There was a total of 15810 feet (@ 3 miles) constructed on Bethel Creek and 6149 feet (1.2 miles) on Butte Creek. The livestock being excluded from the riparian area in this project were primarily beef cattle. The average set-back was 30 feet for Bethel creek and 20 Feet for Butte Creek. Butte Creek is significantly smaller than Bethel. Butte has an average active channel width of 8 feet, with a bank height of 4 feet. Bethel Creek has an average active channel width of 20 feet and an average bank height of 5 feet. An extensive stock water system was installed for this project due to it’s large size. The CWA crew constructed two separate gravity feed systems with a total of six (6) stock tanks, and approximately 6000 feet of buried pipe. The landowner assisted with the project design, site preparation (brush clearing), and assisted with the placing of the wood posts. He had a tractor that was able to push the posts in, which greatly assisted the crew due to the very hard ground at the site. The site was planted with a mixture of conifers and hardwoods. Due to the size of the site and tree availability, we will be finishing the planting this year (winter 2002/2003). The landowner will also be responsible for all fence and water system maintenance for the life of this project (10 years). This includes materials and labor. This project was completed in July 2002, but planting will be completed this winter.
