This project consisted of constructing 4419 feet of woven (2423 feet) and barbed (1996 feet) fencing along the Middle Fork Coquille River at river mile 11. The site is currently used as year-round cattle grazing and summer hay production. The Middle Fork Coquille has an active channel of 100 feet with steep banks (approximately 50 feet) that are fairly stable with rock, conifers and willows. The riparian was in excellent shape. The average setback of the fence was over 100 feet. The intent of this project was to protect the existing riparian area as well as exclude livestock from the stream. This project was completed in June of 2001. Approximately 150 trees were planted during the winter of 2001/2002. The trees were planted in areas where cattle have created trails and there was some open areas. A post project survey was conducted in June of 2002 and only 3 trees were found to be dead, so overall survival of the planted trees was excellent. The landowner assisted with this project by pushing in fence posts with his tractor.
