The instream phase completed by the CWA consisted of constructing three (3) full channel spanning boulder weirs along a 500 foot stretch of the North Fork Coquille. The rock size varied form ½ cubic yard to ¾ cubic yard, and 400 cubic yards were used. Typically the CWA uses 1 to 2 ½ cubic yard size boulders, but due to a misunderstanding with the rock company the boulders were a little smaller than normal. The rock was hauled in by dump truck and dumped at two “dump sites” that were easily reached by the trucks. The trucks did not enter the stream channel at any time.

The excavator operator (Paul Thompson, CWA employee) compensated for this by making the weirs a little wider than normal. ODFW was consulted with before constructing the weirs and they were satisfied with the design changes. The CWA rents an Excavator from Hertz Equipment rental that has been modified to be “stream friendly”. This machine’s hydraulic and other fluids have been changed to be stream safe if there happens to be a leak or other kind of accident.
